I recently had the chance to try the 601 Blue Label Maduro Robusto, a great cigar. I have provided my review below. This content uses referral links.
I recently had the chance to smoke the 601 Blue Label Maduro Robusto. This was an excellent cigar all around. I’m not sure where I got it, as it’s been in my humidor for quite some time, but it was an excellent smoke.
A Nicaraguan cigar made exclusively with Nicaraguan tobacco, this was a great cigar from beginning to end.
In my grading system and review below, I have adopted the Cigar Journal: For the Discerning Aficionado method. It provides an excellent system for keeping track of my favorite smokes, and I recommend it to any cigar smoker.
Look of the Label
As the picture above indicates, the label was eloquent, detailed, yet simple. It was consistent with what I expect from a premium cigar. It betrayed the care the manufacturer put into the making of the 601 Blue Label Maduro Robusto.
Condition of the Cigar
The 601 Blue Label Maduro Robusto came in pristine condition. It was smooth, of solid construction, and nearly flawless in appearance.
Feel of the Wrapper
The wrapper, too, was perfect. It felt consistently solid—but not hard—on the squeeze throughout the stick. Everything about it indicated it consisted of high-quality tobacco perfectly rolled.
Aroma of the Wrapper
The pre-lit cigar had a pleasant coffee aroma. It smelled smooth and delicious.
The cut was smooth and did not cause any damage to the impeccable integrity of the cigar.
The 601 Blue Label Maduro Robusto lit up quickly and evenly. It was precisely what you want to see.
The draw was perfect from beginning to end. It was an easy smoke that provided just the right touch of resistance. The draw perfectly complimented the flavors of the cigar for a pleasant smoking experience.
On the retrohale, the cigar had the taste of spice or perhaps pepper. It was, however, a bit too much for my taste. Not quite abrasive, but definitely not as smooth as I like.
My sinuses were a bit intolerant of the smoke, and retrohaling caused noticeable irritation.
Flavor of the Smoke on the Palate
The 601 Blue Label Maduro Robusto was a medium to full-bodied cigar with the taste of spice and hints of coffee.
I could not detect the almond and caramel that other reviewers have pointed out. Regardless, however, while it may not be among the best cigars I’ve ever tasted, it was undoubtedly wonderfully delicious.
I loved this cigar.
The Aroma of the Smoke
The cigar had a nice, deep aroma of earth and spice. It was wonderfully smooth. Again, it wasn’t the best cigar I’ve ever encountered, but it was excellent, nonetheless.
The burn was nearly perfect. While it did not have the elusive razor-sharp burn line I like to see, it was not too far off that mark. It burned consistently and required no maintenance.
It’s hard to ask for more.
The ash did ok. There was nothing impressive about its strength or consistency, but it didn’t cause me any trouble, either.
Bodily Sensation From the Smoke
Here the 601 Blue Label Maduro Robusto was perfect. It left me feeling mellow and relaxed. I have found this difficult to come by in maduro cigars, so I was quite impressed.
No Loose Tobacco
No flakes of tobacco ever found their way into my mouth. This cigar was perfectly constructed.
Final Grade: 601 Blue Label Maduro Robusto
This was an excellent cigar and paired well with a good cup of coffee.
My original grade had it coming in at a 93, but I added an extra point for being smokable right down to the nub. (See the picture above.)
This was a smoke that I simply did not want to end, and I did not allow it to end until the cigar grew too short to hold.
At about $6.75 per cigar at Cigar International, it’s not unreasonably priced. (Though, for me, it’s probably not an everyday smoke, either.)
Final Grade: 94 / A
While I don’t believe the 601 Blue Label Maduro Robusto came from Monthly Clubs’ Cigar of the Month Club, I still want to take a moment to recommend the club. I’ve been a member for years, and I love it.
You’ll get five premium cigars delivered right to your door every month. (There’s also a more expensive Rare Cigar Club available, for those who are interested.)
The opportunity to try a variety of high-quality cigars and to learn more about cigars in general through the accompanying tasting notes has been an invaluable experience for me. I have enjoyed being a member, and I recommend giving it a try.
